Paperman
Exquisite!
I have to admit to getting slightly teary eyed watching this....! Beautifully crafted and styled, with a perfect example of how you don't always need dialogue! Old school Disney illustration perfectly done. Short and most definitely sweet :)

Yeah Just There

A little disturbing the first couple of seconds, but once I relaxed into it..! Imaginative little animation.Thursday, 2 September 2010
Stop and stare...
Always had a thing for stop animation.
Loved a bit of Jason And The Argnauts after Playdays and Sesame Street. I went mad for Wallace and Gromit in Nick Park's 'A Grand Day Out' and watched Tim Burton's 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' 'til the VHS almost wore out. And my heart actually explodes at the ingenuity of Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' video. Recently I watched One Million Years B.C. and fucking loved how crude it looked.
There's just something something about how higgeldy-piggeldy they are, and that seemingly rudimentary way they play out that makes me grin right from one ear to t'other. I just have so much admiration for them, and they really inspire me.
I had a go at an stop frame animation in 2nd year of uni, where I realised just how bloody time consuming and quite boring they can be to shoot. Mind you, I was both hand painting one of my friend's entire body and pressing 'shoot' all on my own. Just 50 seconds of playing time, meant a whole day painting from the morning right through to the dark hours of the evening; not to mention time spend editing.
Anyway, I fucking love this shit. And her are some of the ones that I found whilst whiling away the wee hours of the morning.

Sledgehammer!
Only a couple of days ago, I was "reminiscing" about this music video (made a year before I was born!), but the last post made me think of it. Absolutely fucking brilliant imagination, and so well executed for the 80s! Take it away, Peter.
Strawberry Swing
So here it is. Coldplay's official 'Strawberry Swing' video directed by Shynola.
I'm so glad it's an actual music video and not just an advert for a fucking insurance company, or a phone company - I'm sick to death of big corporate brands jumping on the band wagon, when their brand values and core sensibilities aren't even reflected in the disproportionately large amount of creativity on show. It's as if animation/cartoons/hand drawn things have become absolute commonplace on mainstream telelvision (my boyfriend detests this wave) and up until now, this hatred had not yet been instilled in me, but finally I have decided that it's all a bit too much. So... no more Carphone Warehouse animations, please?
